Why Is It So Hard to Live Organized?
Most people struggle with getting organized because of clutter on the inside. There is a connection between internal and external clutter that is often overlooked.
This does not mean that having a clutter-free home is impossible. It simply means that we need to explore what is happening internally so we can create better systems to manage the clutter we see externally.

Four Areas of Internal Clutter
To overcome a lack of motivation, a clear goal must be in place. A goal provides direction and helps you envision where your organizing journey can take you.
Goals can be time-sensitive or function-related.
Time-sensitive goal:
“I am moving in three months.”
Function-related goal:
“We have out-of-town guests coming to stay in our home.”
Having a goal can create a sense of urgency and provide a dopamine boost that moves your thoughts from “I’ll do it someday” to “I need to start now.”
If you do not have a specific deadline, create your own sense of urgency. Your mind will often respond to the expectations you set for yourself.
This is one of the biggest challenges in the organizing process.
Logically, most of us understand that our belongings are simply objects—they are not living and breathing. However, applying that understanding in real life can be much more difficult.
Overcoming emotional attachment requires creating some physical distance from those items, and this may require support from an objective person. This may not be a spouse or significant other, as they often have emotional attachments of their own.
A Professional Organizer can also provide guidance and an objective perspective when needed.
There are many strategies for working through emotional attachment, which will be explored in a future blog. The most important first step is recognizing that this is an internal part of the clutter journey.
Many people carry emotional clutter from childhood after being labeled as “messy” or “lazy.” For some, those experiences may run even deeper.
As you begin working through external clutter, it is important to create a positive internal playlist. When negative thoughts appear, practice replacing them with kindness and encouragement.
The way we speak to ourselves influences the way we think.
There will be good days and difficult days throughout the organizing journey. Remember that it is a process, and progress is worth celebrating.
Surround yourself with positive thoughts, uplifting music, and supportive people. Celebrate every victory along the way—just maybe skip celebrating with a shopping trip. 😊
Many adults are unaware that ADHD may contribute to their struggles with organization.
Executive functions, which are managed by the frontal lobe of the brain, include skills such as time management, emotional regulation, organization, prioritization, working memory, and planning.
Everyone has areas where they are naturally stronger than others.
An official ADHD diagnosis requires a professional evaluation, but understanding your strengths and challenges can help you create systems that work for you.
Focus on the tasks you do well, delegate what you can, and remember that weaker areas can improve through practice and consistent effort.
The Path Toward Living Organized
Coming to terms with your struggle to live organized is often the first step toward creating meaningful change.
Our internal struggles have a direct impact on our external environment, and there is no shame in asking for help along the way.
Choose your support system wisely. Whether it is a trained Professional Organizer, a therapist, or a trusted friend, the right support can make your organizing journey less overwhelming.
You are not failing—you are learning how to create systems that work for you.
