Have you ever opened a drawer, closet, or cabinet and felt instantly overwhelmed — unsure of what you even own anymore?
Most of us move through our days without pausing to truly assess what we own, how much of it we actually use, and what may simply be taking up valuable space in our homes — and in our minds.
Yet when we intentionally take the time to look at what we have, something shifts. We gain a clearer understanding of what is truly serving us — and what may no longer have a place in this season of life.
In many ways, taking inventory helps remove some of the emotional attachment we place on our belongings. It allows us to see things more clearly and realistically.

You may have heard of the 80/20 rule — we often use only 20% of our belongings 80% of the time. Once you begin taking inventory, this concept starts to make a lot more sense. Many of the things we currently own are rarely used, rarely worn, or perhaps have never even been used at all.
This realization is not meant to bring guilt or shame. Instead, it is meant to bring awareness.
That awareness helps us better determine what we truly need, what we genuinely love, and what may simply be creating unnecessary clutter in our homes — and in our minds.
This simple practice is actually how I began living a more organized life.
And it all started with something very small:
a sock drawer and fifteen minutes.
I emptied the drawer completely and began sorting through everything inside. I removed socks with holes, socks without matches, and pairs I no longer enjoyed wearing. Once I finished, I counted what remained.
Doing this helped me clearly see what I actually needed and what I didn’t. It also helped me organize the drawer in a way that made daily life easier. I placed the socks I wore most often toward the front so they were easy to access.
The entire process took only fifteen minutes, yet it created a surprising sense of clarity and order.
Here are three practical benefits of taking inventory:
When you know exactly what you already own, you are far less likely to purchase unnecessary duplicates. Taking inventory creates awareness and helps reduce impulse buying because you become more intentional with your spending.
It also helps you recognize how much space you truly have before bringing more items into your home.
As seasons change, our needs change too.
For example, once winter ended, I removed my heavier socks from the drawer and stored them away neatly until they were needed again. Simply removing bulky, out-of-season items instantly made the drawer feel more organized and functional.
Less clutter creates more breathing room.
When we have too many things, it becomes difficult to keep track of what we own. Items often get pushed into forgotten corners, drawers, and closets.
Many of these items were purchased with good intentions, but over time they become buried beneath everything else.
Taking inventory helps bring those forgotten items back into view, allowing you to create systems that make more sense for your daily life and reduce the frustration of constantly searching for things inside your own home.
Keep in mind that the larger the space, the larger the inventory process may feel — and that’s completely okay. That’s why I always encourage you to begin small.
Start with one drawer.
One shelf.
One basket.
One cabinet.
Small steps still create meaningful progress.
Learning to take inventory is a practice — and like any practice, it takes time to develop. Be patient with yourself throughout the process. This journey is not about perfection. It is about creating a home and a life that feel calmer, simpler, and more intentional.
My challenge to you today is simple:
Choose one small area of your home and take inventory.
You might be surprised by the peace and clarity it brings.
Happy organizing!
