Why Is It So Hard to Live Organized?

Most people struggle with getting organized because of clutter on the inside. There is a connection between internal and external clutter that is often overlooked.

This does not mean that having a clutter-free home is impossible. It simply means that we need to explore what is happening internally so we can create better systems to manage the clutter we see externally.

 

Four Areas of Internal Clutter

  1. Lack of Motivation

To overcome a lack of motivation, a clear goal must be in place. A goal provides direction and helps you envision where your organizing journey can take you.

Goals can be time-sensitive or function-related.

Time-sensitive goal:
“I am moving in three months.”

Function-related goal:
“We have out-of-town guests coming to stay in our home.”

Having a goal can create a sense of urgency and provide a dopamine boost that moves your thoughts from “I’ll do it someday” to “I need to start now.”
