Every home has at least one…or more?
It’s the place where random items end up when no one knows exactly where to put them. One junk drawer can easily turn into two… and before long, the possibilities for more feel endless.
Does this sound familiar?
“I might need this someday.”
“I’m not sure what this is, so I should probably keep it.”
“I found it once… what if I can’t find it again?”
“It’s in there somewhere.”
While these “drawers of surprise” may seem harmless, they often create more stress and disorganization than we realize. We spend valuable time searching for one item, only to get distracted by five other forgotten things we discover along the way.
So how do we transform a junk drawer into a functional multi-purpose space that actually works for us?
The answer is simple: create intention for the space.
Intention is what helps keep a space organized long-term. When a drawer has a clear purpose, it becomes easier to maintain and easier to use in everyday life.
Here is my simple 5-step process for turning a junk drawer into an organized, functional drawer:
Take everything out and look for patterns. Are the items mostly office supplies? Small tools? Household items?
Group similar items together as you go.
Keep a trash can nearby because you will likely find things you no longer need — broken pieces, expired items, or parts that belong to things you no longer own.
Also create a “relocate” pile for items that belong somewhere else in your home.
Once your items are grouped, ask yourself how much of each item truly needs to stay in the drawer.
For example, do you need three rolls of tape in this space, or would one be enough? Could the extras be stored elsewhere?
This step helps reduce unnecessary clutter and creates more room for function.
Before putting anything back, take a moment to think about how you want this drawer to function.
The categories you created will help guide you. Build the organization around those groupings so the drawer supports your daily routines.
This becomes the intention for the space.
Now it’s time to return the items that belong in the drawer.
You can use organizing accessories such as dividers, trays, or small containers to help keep categories separated and easy to maintain.
The goal is simple:
Make items easy to find and easy to return to the same place each time they are used.
Once your drawer is organized, relocate the items from your “relocate” pile to better spaces in your home.
Using this same intentional mindset throughout your home can help create more order and less frustration overall.
Intentional spaces create both function and order — and that is how we turn a junk drawer into a multi-purpose drawer that truly works.
Life feels a little easier when there is less disorganization.
And remember, every organized space needs maintenance from time to time to help it stay that way.
Happy organizing! ๐
