Majority Rules: A Simple Way to Organize Any Space ๐Ÿก

When it comes to organizing, there are many different methods you can try. Over time, I've discovered a technique that I personally use because it's easy to remember, simple to follow, and can be applied to almost any area of your home.

I call it Majority Rules.

This technique helps you determine what a space should be used for by looking at the items already there. Instead of fighting against what your space is telling you, you can use it as a guide to make organizing easier and more manageable. โœจ

Let me explain how it works and how you can put it into practice in your own home.

Step 1: Take a Walk Through Your Space ๐Ÿ‘€

Before you start moving things around, take a few minutes to walk through the area you want to organize. Look carefully at what's there and how the space is currently being used.

As you observe the area, ask yourself:

  • What items do I see the most?
  • Are there common themes among these items?
  • How is this space being used right now?
  • Do I see anything that doesn't seem to belong here?

Don't worry about making decisions just yet. The goal is simply to understand what's happening in the space before you begin.

Step 2: Let the Majority Define the Space

This is where the Majority Rules technique comes in.

Look at the items in the area and identify the group that makes up the majority. These items will often have something in common, helping you determine the main purpose of the space.

For example, if most of the items in an area are office supplies, that may be a good indication that the space should primarily serve as a workspace.

Once you recognize the common theme, the area can begin to define itself. This gives you a clearer direction and makes it easier to decide what belongs there.

You can certainly try to fight what the majority is telling you, but I don't recommend it! ๐Ÿ˜Š Working with the natural purpose of your space can make the organizing process much simpler.

Step 3: Decide What Stays and What Goes

Once you've determined the majority for the space, it's time to make some decisions.

Look at the items that fit the main purpose of the area. Decide which ones should stay and how they can be arranged in a way that makes sense for you.

Next, look at the items that don't fit.

Ask yourself whether they belong somewhere else in your home or whether you're ready to let them go.

Remember, an item doesn't necessarily need to be discarded just because it doesn't belong in its current location. Sometimes, it simply needs a more suitable home. ๐Ÿ’›

Step 4: Find a Home for the Remaining Items

If you decide to keep the items that don't belong in the current space, find another area where they make more sense.

As you move those items, think about the Majority Rules technique again. Look at the other space, identify its common theme, and determine whether the items you're keeping fit there.

This is also a great opportunity to group similar items together. When like items are stored in the same area, it's easier to see what you have and find what you need.

Continue making thoughtful decisions until the space you're organizing better reflects its intended purpose.

A Simple Technique You Can Use Throughout Your Home ๐Ÿก

The beauty of the Majority Rules technique is that you can apply it to almost any area of your home.

Whether you're organizing a bedroom, a closet, a home office, or a storage area, the same basic steps apply:

  • Walk through the space and observe what's there.
  • Look for common themes among the items.
  • Let the majority help define the purpose of the space.
  • Decide what stays, what moves, and what you're ready to let go of.
  • Find appropriate homes for the items you decide to keep.

Once you begin thinking in terms of Majority Rules, the organizing process can feel more straightforward. Instead of trying to force everything into place, you have a simple method to guide your decisions.

Ready to Give Majority Rules a Try? โœจ

The next time you want to organize an area of your home, take a moment to step back and look at what you already have.

Let the majority of your items guide you. Make thoughtful decisions about what belongs, and give the remaining items a place where they make sense.

You don't have to figure everything out at once. Start by observing your space and take it one decision at a time.
