The Simple Organizing Starter Guide

Simple habits for a calmer, more organized home

Today is the day!

Today is the perfect day to begin your organizing journey—even if you've tried before.

The good news is that you don't have to organize your entire home in one weekend. In just a few weeks of consistent effort, you can begin building simple habits that make everyday life feel more organized and less overwhelming.

My suggestion? Choose one or two strategies each week and practice them consistently. As those habits become part of your daily routine, you can always add another one.

Remember, progress is built one simple step at a time.

1. Make Your Bed First Thing in the Morning

As soon as you get out of bed, make it.

This simple habit sets the tone for the rest of your day and gives you an immediate sense of accomplishment.

2. If You Get It Out, Put It Back

One of the easiest ways to reduce clutter is to return items to their proper place as soon as you're finished using them.

This simple habit prevents clutter from piling up and saves you time later.

3. One Thing In, One Thing Out

Before bringing something new into your home (other than food), choose something to let go of.

It's a wonderful lifelong habit—and one that's great to model for your children as well.

4. Do a 15-Minute Evening Reset

Set a timer for 15 minutes before bed and spend that time putting away anything left out during the day.

You'll thank yourself in the morning when you wake up to a calmer, tidier home.

5. Give Everything a Home

Everything needs a designated place.

Choose storage solutions that are simple and easy for everyone in your home to use. If there's no room for something, it may be time to let something else go.

6. Handle Paper Right Away

Paper clutter can quickly become overwhelming.

As mail and paperwork come into your home, sort them immediately.

  • Recycle or throw away junk mail.
  • File important documents.
  • Place papers to be shredded near your shredder—or shred them right away if possible.

7. Clear Your Flat Surfaces

Kitchen tables, dressers, countertops, and coffee tables tend to collect clutter.

Keeping these surfaces clear instantly makes a room feel more open, peaceful, and inviting. You'll be surprised how much calmer your space—and your mind—can feel.

8. Use a Calendar

Whether you prefer paper, digital, or both, use a calendar to keep track of appointments and important dates.

Free your mind from trying to remember everything so you have more mental space for what truly matters.

9. Write Down Your Top Three Priorities

Each day, identify the three most important things you want to accomplish.

You can do this the night before or first thing in the morning. Whether you write them on paper, keep them in your planner, or use your phone, having a plan helps you stay focused.

10. Just Do It

Sometimes we simply have to take the emotion out of the task.

“I don't feel like it.”

“I'll do it later.”

Those thoughts rarely help us move forward.

Instead, choose to take one small step. Action builds momentum.

Bonus Tips

Bonus Tip #1

Post these strategies somewhere you'll see them every day.

Bonus Tip #2

Set reminders or alarms on your phone to help you stay on track until these habits become second nature.

Celebrate Your Progress

As each strategy becomes a habit, take time to celebrate your progress.

Remember, you're building the habits of living organized—not striving for perfection.

There's no need to implement everything at once. Choose one or two strategies, stay consistent, and allow those small daily actions to create lasting change.

Before long, you'll discover that living organized isn't about doing more—it's about creating simple habits that make life easier.
