Start-to-Finish Organizing

To set yourself up for success with any organizing project, you need a plan. ๐Ÿ“

Think of your plan as a map that guides you from the initial idea all the way to a completed space. Before you begin sorting, decluttering, or organizing, take a little time to think through where you're going and how you'll get there.

What Does a Good Organizing Plan Look Like? ๐Ÿค”

  1. Focus on the Finish First ๐ŸŽฏ

I know this may sound backward, but before you can create a plan, you need to know where you're going.

What do you want the finished space to look like? More importantly, how do you want the space to function?

Take the garage, for example. Is your goal to create a space where you can park your car? ๐Ÿš— Or do you need additional storage? ๐Ÿ“ฆ

Those are two very different goals—and the plan for organizing the space will look different depending on how you want to use it.

Start by identifying your desired outcome. Once you know where you're going, you can begin creating a plan to get there.

  1. Get It on Your Calendar ๐Ÿ“…

Choose a specific date and time to work on your organizing project. This is your appointment with yourself—the time when your plan begins to come to life.

When estimating how long a project will take, give yourself more time than you think you'll need.

If you're new to organizing, I encourage you to start small. Instead of tackling the entire garage in one day, focus on one section or even half of the space during a single time block.

Starting and finishing a project on the same day can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Break it down into smaller sections.

Divide the project into manageable steps, and it becomes much easier to conquer. ๐Ÿ’›

  1. Prepare Well ๐Ÿ“ฆ

Preparation can make a huge difference in keeping your organizing project moving forward.

Before you begin, think about what you'll need to complete the project.

Consider preparing:

  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Boxes labeled: Keep, Toss, and Donate
  • ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Trash bags for obvious garbage
  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Clear donation bags for items such as clothing, so they aren't accidentally thrown away

It's also helpful to have a plan for where your donation items will go.

Will you be taking them to a donation facility, or are you using an organization that offers pickup?

If possible, decide this before you begin and schedule the pickup in advance. This can help prevent donation items from sitting around your home and becoming another source of clutter.

A Word About Donations ๐Ÿ’›

Please avoid donating items that are broken, missing pieces, ripped, or heavily stained.

Only donate items that are still usable and in good condition.

  1. Share the Plan ๐Ÿค

Family and friends can be wonderful sources of encouragement and support during an organizing project.

If you live alone, consider inviting one supportive person to help you stay focused and motivated. If you live with others, it's still important to keep them informed about your plan.

You never know—they may surprise you and want to help! ๐Ÿ˜Š

When you share your plan, explain what you're hoping to accomplish from start to finish. Talking through your plan can also help reinforce your goals and keep you focused.

Tip: Choose Your Helpers Wisely ๐Ÿ’ก

One helpful person can be a great source of support. Too many people, however, can sometimes become a distraction.

Choose wisely.

Even if someone doesn't help you with the actual organizing, there are still other ways they can support you. They could:

  • ๐Ÿ’ช Move heavy objects
  • ๐Ÿš— Help load donation items into the car
  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Drop donations off for you

There is always a way for the right people to help.

Start to Finish โœจ

As you prepare to tackle the clutter in your home, remember to put first things first.

โœจ Make a plan.
๐Ÿ“… Schedule the time.
๐Ÿ“ฆ Prepare well.
๐Ÿ’› Share your plan with others.

Taking the time to prepare before you begin can help make your organizing project feel more manageable and increase your chances of success.

Remember, you don't have to do everything at once.

Start small. Follow your plan. Take one step at a time. ๐Ÿ’›

With a little preparation and a clear plan, you can move from start to finish with greater confidence and success. โœจ
