How to host your own wine tasting

Uncategorized Jun 20, 2016

Let me start by saying, Cheers! A wine tasting is a wonderful way for you and your guests to try out new  wines. A tasting affords people the chance to get out and socialize. Having an event like this is a lot fun. It  should not be a stressful thing. I am giving you some simple tips on hosting because I know you can be a terrific host.  Let me start by dispelling a few myths- -You don’t have to know a lot about wine, you don’t even have to know anything! -You don’t have to get all fancy unless you want to! -There is no wrong way to do one, for goodness sake the wine police will not take you away! -You don’t have to be rich to host one!  So, now you know you can do this, let’s learn how…

1. I want you to pick a date to host your event

2. Figure out what you would like to drink. If you are a beginner wine drinker I would like to make a couple of suggestions to you. Start with a white wine. I would recommend Moscato(very sweet), Riesling( make sure to get the sweet one), or a white wine blend ( such as Apothic white). So you  would want to have more than one to taste. You should find one, taste it and then do some research to    find others like it. 3 wines are ideal for a wine tasting. Now, if you are experienced at drinking wine,   go with what you like for your tasting.

3. Decide if you are doing a vertical tasting which is the same wine but consecutive years. For example,  Pinot grigio 2014, 2013, 2012,etc. If not a vertical then do a horizontal. This is where you decide  which varietal (the grape) and the year but from different wineries. For example, if you were doing Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, then it could be from just California or just Napa or Cabs from all over. It  is best to try and give your guests some differentiation. I would caution against tasting all from the  same region. It is more fun to mix it up. It’s a preference.

4. Send out an evite with the specifics. Let them know what you will be tasting. You could ask them to bring an hors d’oeuvre or part of a meal if you are doing a dinner. Whatever they bring should
