CONFESSIONS OF A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZER

Uncategorized Jun 20, 2016

It's Sunday and I have been working on getting my family to do their part all weekend. Their part is to do their chores as well as put their stuff away in their rooms. This often requires them to remove it from the main living areas! Needless to say, my home is not organized 24/7!!

Yep, I know this comes as a shock but it is true! We are a household of 6 and we do acquire "stuff".

As a matter of fact let me share with you some staggering facts from becomingminimalist.com.
1. The average American home has 300,000 items.
2. 3.1% of the world's children live in America but own 40$ of the toys consumed globally.
3. The average American woman owns 30 outfits, 1 for each day in a month. While in 1930 that number was 9!

While I would really like to think of myself as not in any of the categories listed above, I am afraid I am. We are. My family is!!!

There are days when I would love to be a minimalist. For example, this weekend I wouldn't have spent so much time trying to get people to put things away if we had less to put away! I do like my "things" don't get me wrong but I do think life is getting more and more complicated with each thing I bring into my home. I have been purging just like I encourage my organizing clients to do. We purge once every 3 months with the kids. They grow so fast!! I myself, do purge less as I thankfully don't outgrow my clothes.

That being said,  even in my disorganized state there is organization. This is because I have systems in place so the disorganized moments just need  a little maintenance. Purging clothing is an organizational system. When you put a system in place it is completely natural that you will have to do maintenance on it. Things change as far as the needs for your space. Sometimes, family members need retraining. It's best not to panic when disorganization takes over your spaces. Try to focus on reorganizing the space. Do not give in to the disorganization!! Stay strong!!!

I find that watching some key zones in my home allow me to get clutter and disorganization under control in a shorter amount of time. Here are my key zones: kitchen counter, dining room table, entrance way, bathroom counter. When I focus on these areas I am able to FOCUS my time in a way that I can see improvement!  By taking a few minutes on each of these areas restoring them to organization I am right back to where I began, my organizational nirvana! This is key to keeping my head in the game of organizing. It's all about staying motivated and saving time.
