5. staying fit and healthy
6. learn something exciting
7. quit smoking
8.help others in their dreams

10. spend more time with family

45% of Americans make resolutions.
8% are successful in sticking with their resolutions.
24% never succeed and fail on their resolution each year
64% make it past one month
46% make it past 6 months
(this info from Statistic Brain Institute)

I must confess this is a little higher than what I thought it would be. From listening to media posts and television commercials the number of successful would have appeared to be less. Even so, you would hope there could be a 100% success rate if it was so great!! Realizing that there is rarely a 100% anything we can move forward. Let's talk about why you won't ever have 100% success. Resolutions are usually superficial in that they cover our surface selves and behaviors without factoring in what is behind those behaviors. It's always a good idea to participate in self-examination. We always have room for improvement because we really are a "work in progress". It won't happen until we get into the underlying issues.

Let's talk about resolution #1, losing weight. Most of us by now have learned that there is a honest to goodness reason why you needed to lose weight. It was because you ate rather than deal with issues you were faced with. This snowballed into health issues and so on.....

The other piece of why people don't succeed has to do with the fact that the resolutions are really wishes and not resolutions. By definition, a resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. Maybe it ought to be called, New Year's Wishes!!

Personally, I don't do the whole "resolution" thing. What I do is an evaluation of myself-mind, body and spirit. This evaluation tells me what I did well and what I still need to work on. Then I put a plan into place to accomplish this. Let me show you....
Mind: what have I done to grow in knowledge? How well do I maintain positive thoughts?
ACTION- What could I do better?

Body: Did I accomplish the fitness goals I set at the beginning of the year?
ACTION-What could I do to improve more?

Spirit: Quietly reflect on what makes me tick? Could I pray more? Should I reserve more quiet time? Reflect on my journaling to see where I've experience spiritual growth and celebrate that.
ACTION- What areas could I still improve on?

So if you've fallen off the resolution train you can join me on my personal awareness approach which is more holistic and more rewarding in the end.

Let me know if you try this by writing your comments here.

Life is but a journey...
